Derwentwater Walk and Great North Run

Following on from the success of the Lake District Three Peaks and the Ullswater Way Challenge, the Borderway Team will once again be fundraising for People First through the Summer. This year our very own Community Champion, Jenny Strong, has set the team a series of challenges throughout the year.

People First are an independent advocacy charity whose purpose is to help those with learning disabilities live their best lives by enabling them to share their views, build their skills and support them through difficult times

In the first of their two main challenges, members of the team will be completing one of the nation’s favourite walks, a 10-mile walk around scenic Derwentwater. The challenge will take place on Sunday 7th July and will include 7 members of the team and their families.

Derwentwater is known as the Queen of the Lakes and the stunning scenery on the walk captures the best of our home county, so it seemed a fitting choice.

By undertaking this challenge in an accessible location, we’re hoping to be joined by some learners from People First who can do some of the walk with us. They’ll also be keeping us fully fuelled with their famous flapjack baked at their on-site café in Carlisle.

Jenny, who is also one of our Direct and Corporate Account Manager’s, said: “We have supported People First for a number of years as they are a fantastic organisation with values that closely align to our own.

"Our team have not only enjoyed taking part in fundraising events but have utilised their community days to support with renovation works at the charity’s Carlisle office. With increasing overheads, at a time where budgets are getting squeezed, it’s important that we do what we can for those who need it.”

In addition to our Derwentwater challenge, four of our team members, Matt Dodd, Jenny Strong, Leah Farish and Ryan Walters are racking up a half marathon, by taking on the Great North Run in September. They will be joined by colleagues Debbie Harrison and Kevin Holliday from The Cumberland. The world’s biggest half marathon will take them on a 13.1 mile run from Newcastle to South Shields along with 60,000 other participants.

We will be hosting various other mini fundraising events in between such as a bake sale and charity car wash so keep an eye on our socials for more updates.
